Markus Hartwig Holler, born in Rendsburg in 1796, took over his father's timber business in Büdelsdorf at the age of 20. Büdelsdorf, neighbouring the fortress town of Rendsburg, belonged to the Duchy of Schleswig, which in turn belonged to the Danish state. This also applies to the Duchy of Holstein, which borders directly to the south and is also part of the German Confederation.
